History of the SOPMOD Stock
The original SOPMOD stock was developed by the Crane Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center in an effort to better serve the warfighters. The SOPMOD designed improved upon the standard M4 collapsible stock in many areas. The original Crane SOPMOD stocks were produced in house at the Naval Surface Warfare Center. Lewis Machine & Tool later took the contract to produce the stocks and also made them available to the civilian market. However, the LMT version was rather expensive. In 2009 B5 Systems won the US Army contract to produce the SOPMOD stocks and offers them to the civilian market at a great price.
Design of the Crane SOPMOD Stock
One enhancement was the increased cheek weld surface area. This enhanced cheek weld surface gives rise to twin battery storage compartments. These battery storage compartments provide a water tight tube that can store several spare batteries.
