Magpul MBUS Flip-Up Sight Sets
The Magpul MBUS series sights are a tough, yet economic option for back-up iron sights (BUIS). While they might not be quite as durable as full metal BUIS, such as those available from Troy, they are plenty rugged enough to get the job done. The MBUS sights are spring-loaded and only require that you depress the top lever to for the sights to deploy. Once deployed, the sights are held in the erect position by a detent, as well as spring pressure. However, while erect, the sight may be pushed closed again under firm pressure, without pressing the lever. This allows the sights to fold during an impact, such as getting caught in a doorway, so that you do not further damage the sight. The sights are primarily designed for use on the AR-15 and hence are the same height as the standard A2 iron sights. The sights easily mount to any MIL-STD-1913 railed hand guard. However, it is advised to no mount these sights to a railed gas block. The gas block can generate an excess mount of heat that would permanently damage the MBUS sights. Both the front and rear MBUS sights have protective wings along either side of the actual aiming mechanism. This prevents damage getting to the aiming portion of the sight.
The Gen 2 MBUS sights are available in all of the standard Magpul colors, including black, flat dark earth (FDE), foliage green, OD Green and stealth gray.
Magpul MBUS Front Sight
The MBUS front sight uses a square, A2 style post. The front sight is adjustable for elevation. A front sight adjustment tool is included, and most aftermarket A2 sight adjustment tools will work as well. The front sight cannot be mounted to a railed gas block for heat issues. Gas block can develop a significant amount of heat, which could permanently damage the MBUS front sight. When mounted to a railed hand guard on the same plane as the receiver, the sight will be 2.6” above the centerline of the bore, which is consistent with standard A2 sights. Magpul MBUS Rear Sight
The MBUS rear sight features the same rugged construction and spring action as the front sight. This rear sight comes with a wide and narrow aperture that can be easily selected. The sight is the standard A2 height, which will make this sight compatible with the AR-15 fixed triangle front sight gas block and any other standard A2 height front sight. The rear sight is easily adjustable for windage via a turn knob on the right side of the sight.
Magpul MBUS Pro Sights
Improving upon the already successful MBUS and MBUS Gen 2 sights, Magpul developed the MBUS Pro Sight Set and these new sights have been met by great reviews. The MBUS Pro sights are a premium grade, all steel construction back-up iron sight (BUIS). Due to the steel construction the new pro series sights are more rugged than the original polymer based sights. Where the polymer MBUS sights could not be mounted to railed gas blocks, due to potential heat issues, the Pro sights are able to be mounted to gas blocks without worry. Additionally, the Pro sights feature self-contained adjustment knobs that have positive detents with every position. By having self-contained adjustability, you do not need supplemental tools for adjustment. This is a very beneficial feature, as adjustments tools tend to get lost when you need them the most and you don’t have to worry about taking an extra tool into the field.
Another marked difference from the polymer MBUS sights is that the PRO sights have an extremely low profile when folded down in their stowed position. The folded MBUS Pro rear sight is only 0.432” above the rail while the polymer MBUS sight is 0.51”. This difference in height can be the difference in fitting under a scope or not.
The MBUS Pro sights do come in at a higher price that they polymer-constructed counterparts. However with all steel construction and additional features, you are definitely getting more for your money. And, when compared to other steel constructed BUIS on the market, the MBUS Pro sights are very competitively priced.
The MBUS pro sights present with a similar sight picture that one would be accustom to when firing an AR-15. The rear sight features an interchangeable narrow and wide aperture. The front sight has the familiar squared front sight post.
