The Magpul AFG was developed as a way to promote improved ergonomics and enhanced weapon manipulation. The AFG allows your wrist to lie in a more neutral position while allowing your hand to remain high in relation to the more, giving you improved control of your carbine for target transitions and recoil control. The AFG2 has improved upon the original AFG in a few key areas. The main difference in the newer Magpul FDE AFG2 is that it offers the same advantages of the AFG, but in a small, more compact package.
The AFG2 comes in smaller and lighter than the original Magpul AFG. The AFG2 has a length of 4.7” and a weight of 2.53 ounces. The AFG2 also has a decrease amount of side coverage. This allows for better compatibility with other rail mounted accessories, as you now have more clearance to mount accessories of rails adjacent to the AFG2. Additionally, due to the decreased front to back distance of the AFG2, this foregrip will take up less rail space.
Designed for efficiency
The Magpul AFG2 was developed as a reaction to the evolving techniques of carbine handling and shooting. The original vertical foregrip started to be used in a way that they were not originally intended, as shooters began to use a thumb-break grip to allow them to get the hand more in line with the bore. The instructors at Magpul Dynamics at the time, Travis Haley and Chris Costa made note of this evolution. This lead to the development of the AFG which better accommodated this style of shooting. The AFG2 allows the shooter to get their hand up higher in relation to the bore, similar to the thumb-break grip. However, the AFG2 better accommodates your natural biomechanics and allows your wrist to stay in a more neutral position. This decreases the tension placed on your wrist and allows for a comfortable and sustainable shooting position.
