The KeyMod accessory mounting system is a the generation leap forward in the way of AR-15 hand guards. This mounting systems works with and in some cases replaces the previous standard, Mil-STD-1913 Picatinny rail. The new KeyMod system offer many advantages that simply outclass the old quad rails.
One of the most significant advantages to the KeyMod system is that is that it saves a ton of weight. The reason why it is able to save so much weight is because it is a negative space mounting system. What this means is that you essentially start with a handguard and then remove material to make the mounting slots. This differs from the Picatinny style rails, where you essentially had to added material to provide the mounting surface. For example, this Samson 15” Evo KeyMod rail weight 12.8 ounces. This can be compared to the Samson STAR-R quad rail, which is almost 3 inches shorter, but still weighs over 5 ounces more than the 15” EVO KeyMod. This is a significant difference in weight. Also, since this weight is out in front of the rifle, the effect that it has can be quite dramatic.
The extended length of this EVO hand guard system allow a lot more flexibility. This extended length will offer full protection of your gas block and gas tube. It will also allow you to take a more aggressive, thumb over bore or C-clamp style grip. Also, when using a barricade for more precise shots, this longer KeyMod hand guard will prevent you from accidentally resting your barrel on the barricade. Resting your barrel on the barricade can negatively affect your accuracy, as it can alter your barrel harmonics, or potentially induce some slight barrel deviation.
